Campgrounds near Brevard NC: Davidson River in Pisgah National Forest
Among the campgrounds near Brevard, Davidson River is the one on national forest land. Recreation.gov, which handles reservations for the site, describes it as located in Pisgah National Forest at 2,150 feet elevation, about four miles west of Brevard and under an hour from Asheville, adjacent to the Davidson River.
Sites and facilities
Recreation.gov lists 161 campsites organized into eight loops, with both electric and non-electric options. It says sites have picnic tables, tent pads, lantern posts and campfire rings with grills, that each loop has flush toilets, and that hot showers are provided. Ice and firewood sales are also listed there.
Season and reservations
Recreation.gov states that the facility is open year-round, with check-in at 2:00 pm and checkout at 12:00 pm. It adds that during the winter months first-come, first-served sites are available, with extremely limited availability during peak season and holidays. The Forest Service’s Pisgah Ranger District page, on the other hand, showed the Davidson River Recreation Area as “Site Temporarily Closed” when we last read it. The two pages do not agree, so check both before planning around this campground. Rates are not listed here because they change; see Recreation.gov.
Rules to know
- Pets: Recreation.gov says pets are allowed, must be supervised for the duration of the stay, and must be kept on-leash or contained.
- Food and bears: Recreation.gov says the campground is in black bear territory and that visitors are expected to keep all smellable items locked inside a camper, a vehicle or the provided bear box. It states that non-compliance may result in removal.

Free camping near Brevard NC
For free camping near Brevard NC, check the Forest Service’s current dispersed camping orders, designated areas and closures before choosing a site. An order with an expired end date does not establish the rules in force today. This guide does not recommend unverified dispersed sites.
The ranger district says it has “several camping options, including developed campgrounds and dispersed camping.” The Pisgah Ranger Station is listed at 1600 Pisgah Highway, Pisgah Forest, and the Forest Service is the right place to ask which areas are open. Our directory does not list dispersed sites.
