Privacy policy

WNC Campgrounds is a directory of campgrounds, camping guides and outdoor events in Western North Carolina, part of the WNC Trails network. This policy explains what we collect when you use the site and what we do with it.

Information you give us

• Newsletter: your email address, and optionally your first name and camping interests.
• Submissions: when you submit a campground or an event, or claim a listing, the details you enter plus your name and email so we can follow up.
• Accounts and advertising purchases: your account details and billing information. Payments are handled by our payment processor; we never store full card details.
• Messages you send us through the contact form or by email.

Information collected automatically

Like most websites we collect standard technical information: pages viewed, approximate location from IP address, browser and device type, and the referring site, through analytics tools such as Google Site Kit.

For each campground listing we count page views and clicks on its website, booking, phone and directions buttons. These counts are stored as totals per month, without names or personal identifiers, and are used to report performance to listing owners and advertisers. Your IP address is used briefly to prevent abuse (rate limiting) and is not stored with those counts.

How we use it

• To run the directory, review submissions and keep listings accurate.
• To send the newsletter you signed up for — you can unsubscribe at any time.
• To process advertising orders and deliver the placements you purchased.
• To understand how the site is used and improve it.

Sharing

We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with service providers that help us run the site (hosting, email delivery, payment processing, analytics), and when required by law.

Cookies

The site uses cookies for analytics, to keep you signed in, to remember your cart during checkout, and to understand how visitors arrive at our newsletter sign-up (the wncd_attr and wncd_sid cookies described below). You can block or delete cookies in your browser; some features, such as checkout, need them to work.

When you visit the site we also keep a record of how you arrived, so we can see which pages and links lead to newsletter sign-ups. The first time you visit we store the source of your visit (the UTM tags in the link or the referring website) and the page you entered on, in a cookie called wncd_attr that lasts 30 days. A second cookie, wncd_sid, lasts one day and groups the pages of a single visit. We count anonymous events such as viewing the newsletter page, viewing the sign-up form, signing up and downloading the guide. These counts do not include your name or email address. If you subscribe, we save the source of your visit with your subscription.

Retention

Newsletter subscriptions are kept until you unsubscribe. Submissions and messages are kept as long as needed to review and respond to them. Order records are kept as long as required for accounting and legal purposes.

Children's privacy

The site is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13.
