Camping in Boone NC: how the area is laid out

  • Privately operated campgrounds with RV, tent and sometimes cabin sites.
  • National Park Service campgrounds on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
  • North Carolina State Parks with hike-in backcountry camping.
  • National Forest land and campgrounds, including dispersed camping under Forest Service rules.

Choose the camping style first, then check the operator’s current season, access and booking rules. The sources linked below help you compare individual properties.

Campgrounds near Boone NC: private campgrounds

Flintlock Campground, Boone NC

Explore Boone lists Flintlock Family Campground with camping cabins, tent sites and full-hookup RV sites, and gives its season as April through October. Confirm dates and policies with the operator before booking. See the Flintlock Family Campground listing, phone and map.

Boone KOA Holiday

KOA’s own Boone page describes the campground as the highest KOA east of the Mississippi, at an altitude of nearly 4,000 feet, about 4 miles from city services. It lists long pull-thru RV sites, a pool, mini golf, firewood and a pavilion, and gives the season as May 1 to October 31. KOA also states that Grandfather Mountain footpaths are nearby, that the Blue Ridge Parkway is minutes away, and that the New River is about 9 miles away. Pool dates and other amenities change, so use KOA’s page for the current list. Details for planning are on the Boone KOA listing, phone and map.

If a campground is missing from this guide, check its operator’s website or Explore Boone. A missing listing does not establish whether a property is open, closed or available.

Campgrounds around Boone NC: Blue Ridge Parkway

Julian Price Campground

The National Park Service lists Julian Price Park at Blue Ridge Parkway milepost 297 and says the campground has 197 sites and is open seasonally. The NPS page also describes 47-acre Price Lake for kayaking, canoeing and fishing (a valid Virginia or North Carolina fishing license is required), plus loop trails and access to the Mountains-to-Sea and Tanawha trails. Recreation.gov lists tent-only and RV non-electric sites across six loops (A through F), with flush toilets, a dump station and drinking water, and no electric, water or sewer hookups. Recreation.gov also states that sites are equipped with grills, picnic tables and lantern poles.

The two sources describe reservations differently. The NPS gives 197 sites in total. Recreation.gov’s general description mentions 75 sites for advance reservation and 115 on a first-come, first-served basis, and also carries a notice that 2026 operations are reservation-only. Because this changes by season, read the Recreation.gov Julian Price page and the NPS Julian Price page before choosing dates. Our Julian Price Park Campground listing is in the Blowing Rock hub.

Backcountry sites are first-come, first-served; group sites require reservations.

National Forest rules and closures

For free camping near Boone NC, verify where dispersed camping is permitted with the Forest Service. This guide does not recommend unverified free sites. Check current restrictions and closures before choosing a location.

  • A general forest order for Pisgah, Nantahala, Uwharrie and Croatan National Forests prohibits camping in excess of 14 days within any 30-day period, unless a campsite is posted with different limits.
  • The same order restricts re-establishing a campsite within 10 miles of the previous one, leaving equipment unattended over 24 hours, and failing to remove gear when leaving.
  • The Forest Service lists the Grandfather Ranger District across Buncombe, Burke, Caldwell, McDowell, Avery and Watauga counties, and posts separate camping restrictions for the Linville Gorge Wilderness and Wilson Creek areas.

Rules and closures are posted on the Grandfather Ranger District page and the camping limits order. The district also lists developed options such as Mortimer Campground and the hike-in, primitive Boone Fork Campground.
