North Mills River Campground is a Forest Service campground in the Pisgah National Forest near Mills River, NC, part of our guide to campgrounds in Mills River, NC. This guide covers how the campground is organized, when its services run, how reservations work and what the official sources list nearby, so you can plan camping in Mills River, NC before you book.

Overview: Camping Mills River NC at North Mills River Campground

The Forest Service describes the campground as located just outside Asheville, NC, in the Pisgah National Forest, with the scenic North Mills River running through it and offering fishing and water play. It sits in the Pisgah Ranger District, which the Forest Service lists among its developed campgrounds along with Lake Powhatan Campground and Kuykendall Group Campground. Recreation.gov, where sites are booked, calls it “a rustic mountain getaway in Pisgah National Forest in western North Carolina.”

Mills River camping at this site is run by the Forest Service, with reservations handled through Recreation.gov. For the phone number, address and map, see the North Mills River Campground listing, phone and map.

Sites and facilities at the Mills River campground

The two official sources describe the site types a little differently, so both are given here rather than merged.

  • Forest Service: lists Standard, Electric, Full Hook Up (FHU) and Group site types, and says potable water is available at the site. Its fee list includes Standard, Electric, Full Hook Up and Group site camping, day use, and firewood.
  • Recreation.gov: lists 26 sites in total, with standard nonelectric sites, tent-only nonelectric sites, an RV electric site (Site 14) and a group tent-only area.

Because the two pages differ on electric and full-hookup availability, check the Recreation.gov listing for the specific site you want before you reserve, especially if you are bringing an RV.

Recreation.gov states that sites have picnic tables, tent pads, lantern posts and campfire rings with grills, and that the campground has restrooms with hot showers and flush toilets during the full-service season. The Forest Service lists flush toilets and showers in the bath house, picnic tables, tent pads and lantern hooks, and firewood for purchase. Recreation.gov states that tents must be placed on gravel tent pads. Neither source, as fetched for this guide, gives an accessibility description for the campground, so ask the Pisgah Ranger District if you need accessible facilities.

Season and reservations

The Forest Service lists the campground as open year-round, with limited services from November to March. Recreation.gov gives the dates:

  • March 20 to November 15: full services, including running water, electricity at the electric site and the bathhouse. Recreation.gov says guests must check in with the campground host during this period.
  • November 16 to March 20: winter operations, with walk-up sites only, no running water or electricity and pit toilets only. Recreation.gov lists sites 1 through 13 as available in winter, first-come, first-served, and says sites 14 through 26 close for the season.

Reservations for the regular season are made through Recreation.gov, which recommends booking ahead for weekends and holidays. Recreation.gov also lists a 14-day stay limit; check the listing for how it applies in each season. For phone numbers of the operator and the ranger district, use the listing linked above or the Forest Service page.

A practical point for winter trips: since only sites 1 through 13 stay open and there is no running water, plan to bring your own water and expect pit toilets, as Recreation.gov describes.

Getting there

Recreation.gov gives these directions: from Asheville, take U.S. Highway 280 west to North Mills River Road, then follow North Mills River Road to the campground. The Forest Service page does not give driving times, so check a current map and road conditions before you leave.

The Pisgah Ranger District covers about 163,168 acres across four counties, according to the Forest Service, and its page is the official starting point for district maps and information.

Things to do nearby

The Forest Service lists river and stream fishing and swimming at the campground. Recreation.gov describes access to hiking, fishing and mountain biking. For the wider district, the Forest Service lists 14 day hikes, 8 river and stream fishing sites, 7 mountain biking trails, horseback riding and backpacking. Fishing in North Carolina falls under state rules, so check the NC Wildlife Resources Commission for license requirements.

Recreation.gov names several attractions in the region:

  • Sliding Rock Recreation Area, a 60-foot natural water slide ending in a pool 8 to 10 feet deep, operated by Naventure according to the Forest Service. It lists lifeguards (9 am to 6 pm) and restrooms only from Memorial Day to Labor Day, requires swimming ability to use the slide, and says the area may close for lightning, heavy rain or high water. The Forest Service also notes the parking lot periodically fills and closes temporarily.
  • Looking Glass Falls Scenic Area, directly off Highway 276, with an accessible top viewing deck and stairs down to the creek. The Forest Service states there is no lifeguard on duty, limited parking, and no restrooms or potable water.
  • The Blue Ridge Parkway, managed by the National Park Service, which lists a 469-mile route through North Carolina and Virginia. The Park Service publishes a daily-updated road status and closures page, so check it before planning a drive.

The Pisgah Ranger District page also lists the Cradle of Forestry, Shining Rock Wilderness and Middle Prong Wilderness among the notable areas in the district.

Recreation.gov lists these rules for the campground:

  • A maximum of 2 tents and 2 vehicles per site.
