  • Mount Mitchell State Park is open but reachable only from the Asheville side of the Blue Ridge Parkway while Helene repairs continue north of the park. A section of the Old Mitchell Trail (park office to the Camp Alice Trail junction) and several connecting Pisgah National Forest trails were still closed. Source: NC State Parks

Campground overview

Black Mountain Campground is a Forest Service campground on the South Toe River at the base of the Black Mountains, reached by a gravel road off NC-80 near the Blue Ridge Parkway. Sites are shaded and simple, with vault toilets, drinking water, and river access.

It is the classic starting point for hiking Mount Mitchell on foot: the Mount Mitchell Trail climbs roughly 3,600 feet from the campground to the highest summit in the eastern United States.
